Is this course for you?
This course is for people who are serious about learning how prop making actually works in a Film and TV environment.
It is suited to aspiring and early career prop makers, students and graduates building practical skills, theatre makers looking to move into Film and TV, and working creatives who need a flexible way to learn alongside other commitments.
If you are looking for a quick craft project, a cosplay build, or a materials included kit, this course is probably not the right fit.
What you will learn:
The focus of this course is on transferable skills rather than one off projects.
You will learn how professional prop makers approach builds, how to make design and material choices under real world constraints, and how to create props that read well on camera and hold up in use.
You will develop skills in kit bashing and construction, working with plastics and mixed materials, basic leather construction and wet moulding, paint finishes, weathering and ageing, and adding surface texture such as dirt, grit and wear.
Everything is taught with practical production realities in mind.
How the course works:
Inside The Prop Workshop is fully pre recorded and self paced.
You can work through the modules in your own time and return to them whenever you need.
The course is made up of six structured modules with practical demonstrations and clear explanations.
You can follow along step by step or watch first and apply the techniques later, just as you would on a job.
Alongside the videos, you will have access to a private community forum where you can ask questions, share progress and get feedback from the Makinarium team.
Live Q&A sessions will also be scheduled from time to time.
There are no deadlines and no required live attendance.
One object used to teach multiple skills
Rather than focusing on a single finished hero prop, the course uses a handheld prop that integrates a mobile phone as a way to explore different techniques.
This object is simply a vehicle for learning. Through it, you will practise kit bashing, leatherwork, paint, weathering and surface finishes.
The emphasis is always on understanding why a technique is used and how it can be applied to other builds.
You will gain the skills. What you build with them is up to you.
Course modules:
Module 1 Kit bashing and prop logic
Module 2 Leather construction fundamentals
Module 3 Wet moulding and tool free detailing
Module 4 Paint techniques for props
Module 5 Weathering and ageing
Module 6 Surface finishes and texture
Materials and sourcing:
Materials are not supplied as part of the course.
Learning how to source, choose and adapt materials is a key professional skill, and one that is often overlooked.
A full materials list will be provided, along with guidance on suitable alternatives and budget friendly options.
This reflects how prop makers work in real production environments.
Community and support:
When you enrol, you will be invited into a private course community.
This is a space to share work in progress, ask questions, get feedback and learn from others going through the course. The Makinarium team will be active in the forum, and live sessions will be added when appropriate.
